PRIMERA DIV PREVIEW

Some major changes took place in Primera during the past three months but we still have to wait for the grand finale of the summer’s biggest transfer saga. Is Gareth Bale joining Real Madrid or not? We have read about an agreement in the range of 90 to 120 million euros, it’s been said that Ronaldo will head back to Man U after Bale arrival to Madrid, we even witnessed Al Kaida threatening Tottenham over the Welsh proposed super deal. Well, all these may spice up the hot summer days but the Championship is just a week away so we better focus on the facts and not on the newspaper headlines.

Five out of the top six teams have changed their managers. After the sad medical news of Tito Villanova, Barcelona hired ex Newell’s boss Gerardo Martino. The Argentine will coach in Europe for the first time in his career and he has a lot to prove and a lot to achieve. Definitely it’s a dream job to be coaching possibly the best team in the world but Barca seemed to be much less majestic last season and some of their opponents appeared to have found the antidote for the Blaugrana’s passing game. Another question mark for the upcoming season is how the Brazilian raising star Neymar will adopt in Barca’s gameplay and if he will be able to make things happen alongside Leo Messi. The Catalans are still in the search of a high profile defender not being able to reach an agreement for their top target Tiago Silva.

Real Madrid hired the experienced Carlo Ancelotti right after the divorce with Jose Mourinho. Madrid giants have chosen to invest in Spanish youth talent purchasing the services of Isco and Illaramendi but there is still a gap in the offensive line left by the sale of Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli. In the remaining of the transfer window we will have to see not only if Bale joins Real but also who will be the next to leave Bernabeu after Higuain, Albiol and Callejon.

Now what other news have rocked La Liga world during the summer time? Roberto Soldado joined Tottenham leaving Los Ches without a big name in the roster. Valencia received 30 million for the transfer and they just gave away as little as 3 million to replace the Spaniard with the Portugal international Helder Postiga who has scored 23 goals in 70 Liga appearances for Zaragoza. Atletico may have lost Falcao to Ligue 1 new reach boys Monaco (of course when you get 60 millions in exchange you accept the loss with a smile on the face) but in my opinion they made the no1 deal of the summer by signing David Villa for the ridiculous amount of 2.5 million plus another 2.5 if the player remains in Madrid until the end of 2015-16 season. Rojiblancos made another “value for money” deal purchasing Leo Baptistao who had a prolific year playing for Vallecano. What I really look forward to is to see how will Real Sociedad perform on a top competition like Champions League and how that will affect the Basques in La Liga. Manager Philippe Monanier left for the French side Rennes and now the inexperienced ex assistant manager Jacoba Arrasate will have to guide the team in a highly pretentious season. Now a team that certainly will be weaker than 3 months ago is Malaga. Not only Pellegrini left for Man City but also all the stars of the club have found a different home. Isco to Real Madrid, Joaquin to Fiorentina, De Michellis to Atletico Madrid, Saviola to Olympiakos Pireus, Julio Baptista to Cruzeiro, Toulalan to Monaco.

In the middle level we also have some interesting stuff going on. After Miroslav Dukic moved to Valencia, Real Valladolid hired Juan Ignacio Martinez who really made some magic during the past couple of years when managing Levante. Some transfers that really caught the eye where Fernando Llorente to Juventus, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo to Man City, Benat Etxabarria to Athletic Bilbao, Juan Verdu to Real Betis, Pitti (Rayo’s captain) and Rikki (La Coruna’s striker) to Granada, Giovanni Dos Santos to Villareal, Kevin Gameiro  and Marco Marin to Sevilla.

As for the newcomers, what we can highlight is the return of Elche CF to the top division after whole 25 years. The Valencia club finished on the top of Secunda five points above Villareal and eight points above Almeria who will also return to Primera with an absence of one and two years respectively. Elche’s top gun last year was ex Espanyol forward Ferran Corominas known as Coro who scored 12 goals in 42 appearances.
